This election has had its hopes and promises. The campaign is a sign of something decent that remains of the American democracy, but I wouldn’t romanticize the vote.
In 2000, political power and guanxi went against the wishes of the American people and the American way and we ended up with a President that violated this country’s principles and betrayed its people and allies. In 2004 the ignorance of American people flourished as the President was reelected. As my own parents said, “he started the war, he should finish it.”
This ignorant thinking is not uncommon in the US, but the idea that the US is above the rest of the world in corruption is quite common. I will not romanticize this election. I won’t romanticize the challenges the American people face in overcoming their amazing arrogance and selfishness because that’s what we’re facing as a nation. This election might be a cool reminder of what can be good and decent about civilization, but it’s certainly not enough for me to forget everything that’s happened to get us here.
