Something’s happened that has made me feel a kind of energy and hope that I’ve been increasingly desperate for these last few months in Beijing. Something wonderful. A small but significant gesture, made by my country’s Summer Games team, has inspired me and lifted my spirits. Thanks American team. Our diversity has always been the source of our strength and power. We are a winning combination.
Even before we all start to tally the medals won, I feel a great sense of pride in my countrymen and know that I am indeed not alone as an American in China. They too understand what is more important than medals and are willing to speak peacefully—albeit unpopularly—about it. Just as Americans have done since the birth of that sweet land of liberty.
It’s nice to be reminded how good it is to be an American.
