A good Chinese friend asked me what Americans thought about the nomination of Obama as the Democratic Presidential candidate. I said that Hilary Clinton represented more years of the Clinton family, and that the USA was tired of having one family as president for many years. (12 years of the Bush family = 2 much)
I also said that Hilary was experienced and therefore tainted. You can’t become powerful in a powerful country by being a kind, nice person. To survive and progress, you become corrupt and hard. I think that’s just a natural law of politics.
Obama, on the other hand, represents “the little guy” and the common people who aren’t well connected to secret Gods of power and might. He has the unpretentious demeanor of a newbie, making him immediately identifiable as the peoples’ people.
There’s plenty of opposition, of course. There are plenty of people who favor other candidates and have different views. All the same, I think Americans are excited about politics again, as this runoff would show. In part due to the variety of candidates, Americans are feeling renewed in their potential and more personally powerful, and I think this is a general trend. I think Americans are tired of being the victim. As much as the world has seen the US as aggressive and selfish, Americans have become victims of their own fear, facing increasing hopelessness as powerful political and corporate interests dominated US foreign and domestic affairs.
Americans have an amazing ability of invention and rejuvenation and I think we are going to see a lot of that in the US in the future. Obama’s nomination is a classic American story of anything’s possible.
I tried to ask your opinion about this issue before. But I thought it might be impolite to ask this question because most Americans don’t talk politics to strangers.
I cried this past Tuesday when I watched Hilary’s speech. I never forgot the warm tears flowed down to my cheek when I sat on the sofa watching TV. I knew she lost this campaign. This is my first time to tear for the American politics. Did you say she lost because she is a nice person? How come?
So I switched the channel when I saw Obama on TV.

It is hard to judge whether Hilary is a nice person or not, since politics campaign is jut a social game, and we can’t jugde the one only according to the result.
If someone just judge the candidate by the his or her personal emotional or psycholocical favor, we can doubt wether the one is not maturity enough or we can think the one is sort of naive to talk about the politics.
I like today’s topic in the block like Rick’s saying, what is the deep meaning of this campaign? Why the whole American nation become interested in Politics again which they had been indifferent in a few past years?Because US people suffer
lots of fear,disappointment,despair
after 9.11…
But this time, this campaign, between a women and a black guy,
between the “little people”, the “politics game” begin to play on
social stage, and the main “actor”
is just the common and little people.
So, we can deeply think that, what the really meaning of this campaign, what is the really factor that the whole nation actually care about?
Hilary stands for Women, Obama stands for black or the little peole in US, that is, whoever will
win the Campaign, they both stand for the little or weak social class…
That is the meanig and that is why the whole nation became so care this
campaign, because it stand for hope,namely, HOPE…
Yes, HOPE, USA need the HOPE to rouse up the nation’s confidence and
the enthusiasm; yes,HOPE, USA need to move because People suffer a lots, deeply in heart and mind…
Yes,HOPE, the people need to move on

This Campaign tell the whole nation,
by the politics parable, women and black is possible to be the US president, so what else is impossible?

I am a grass rooted person. It is just my personal feeling to Hilary. She worked so hard for the US people for almost 25 years. The loss will be a big shock for her ambition.
if just comment on personal emotional favor, our sayings will easily be not objective……
Obmama,or black, or the “little” people in USA had worked so hard for the US for hundreds of years, generation by generation silently……but, right now,
they don’t want to continue

I think Hillary accomplished a lot for women. Her campaign was really successful!
Also, she does not have to do the hardest thing: be president. She won’t have to deal with all of the criticism and bad publicity that a president gets. She won’t have to face the likely scandal that a president experiences.
I think it’s probably fortunate for her that she wasn’t president. She moved woman’s rights forward without doing anything to make people angry and criticize her.
Hillary might be more affective in other ways. For example, she might have a seat in Obama’s cabinet, if Obama wins. She also might head a special task force to research options for national health care in the US.

Good guess junsong, but I was always planning to vote for the Democratic candidate, regardless of the candidate. I’ll be watching McCain and learning about him, but I don’t think I can muster much interest in another white male pro-war Republican. I want a more communicative President. A nice guy who will win the world with his sincerity and riteous ideas. Someone who will forge new friendships and bold new ties with other nations. Someone forward-thinking, intelligent and well-spoken.
I also want to show the world that we Americans are like no other people on earth. I, like many of my fellow Americans, am ready to reinvent myself and redefine what it means to be American; It’s what Americans do well and it’s what makes us an innovative wonder.

Yeah, well at least we’ll have the chance. That’s why these elections are so cool, they give the people a chance to change a bad thing.
Right now in the world, businesses have so muhc more power and influence than governments. Same in the US, but since the US is so litigious, we can sometimes see the “little guy” overpower the big, bad influence of the evil corporate interests by proper legal means.
These elections are an example. The Constitution says it has to happen every 4 years, and the no president can serve more than 2 terms, and thank goodness for that. Imagine a lifetime of GW Bush in office?!
